Vision

Transportation systems in mega cities in the United States occupy a unique position from which to showcase for the world what a safe, sustainable, and environmentally sound integrated multi-modal 21st Century urban transportation system looks like.

To make this showcase a reality, i2dEAS LAB's vision would be to create, test, exploit, and validate state-of-the-art methods and analytical tools to optimize the efficiency of the U.S. transportation system through research and synergetic collaboration with transportation providers, communities, and researchers in other disciplines.

i2dEAS LAB has identified four major strategic research areas to achieve this vision:

  1. Integrated Transportation Informatics: autonomous ‘SWAT' modeling, future travel time quantification, stochastic decision-support models
  2. Infrastructure Sustainability Assessments: LCA, LCCA, GIS-based LEED economic effectiveness analysis
  3. Innovative Project Delivery & Contracting: cost-schedule-change tradeoff analysis of projects built under IPD, CMR, DB, Bridging, PPP, A+B, I/D, etc
  4. Construction Economics, Financing, and Valuation: macroeconomic analysis, real-options, project prioritization with Fair Division and CBA analysis.

The i2dEAS LAB's goal is the pursuit of excellence in transportation research by developing a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research program, and by fostering collaboration in a vibrant network among academia, government, and industry. The lab’s efforts in pursuit of these goals would address the nation’s specific transportation challenges while also deepening the knowledge base for transportation theorists and practitioners.

Most of the basic methods and tools for transporting goods and passengers have been around for centuries. Therefore, dramatic progress may be possible by developing groundbreaking decision-support tools or smart systems. For example, advances in computer-aided transportation informatics that make increased automation possible can result in significant savings of millions of taxpayers' dollars and in the implementation of automated models and tools that would be much smarter and greener than any in existence today (Kunhee Choi).
