Student Roster (as of Aug 30,
1996)
Meeting Time: M,W,F: 1:50-5:50 pm
1. Introduce students to design experiences that occur at the intersection of theory and practice.
The studio is based on the idea that the realities of practice, the multiple constraints inherent in design problems, and interactions with clients and consultants who make major contributions in the design process provide a rich and increasingly essential educational context for learning to design buildings.
Students who take this class should expect to make several field trips to the office of PBK Architects in Houston. Frank Kelly of PBK will be a major contributor to the studio, and will be involved in desk reviews as well as class reviews throughout the term. Dan Boggio and other PBK personnel will also participate, but on a more ad-hoc basis. Other educators and consultants will also participate.
2. To act as a "think tank" for generating innovative designs to help explore the physical implications of new educational theories and the increased use of instructional technology.
The design studio is an ideal resource to achieve this goal since it is a politically neutral ground which facilitates collaboration among leading educators, professionals and students. It is expected that the outcome of this studio will be an exhibit of student work as well as a publication of the ideas and projects explored in the studio.
Students will participate in the following projects to meet these goals:
1. Design of a Montessori School,
3 weeks. Ms. Kamy Kryger and Ms. Kim Oehme, Keystone Montessori School,
Bryan Texas, will be the "clients" for this project. They have
recently worked with an architect who has designed a new building for their
school.
2. Architectural Program for a Middle
School of Tomorrow, 3 weeks. Dr. Sarah Ashburn, Bryan ISD, and Dr. Monte
Sriver, Carrollton ISD, will be the "clients". This project will
be performed in teams of two students each.
3. Design of a Middle School for Tomorrow,
8 weeks. Dr. Sarah Ashburn, Bryan ISD, and Dr. Monte Sriver, Carrollton
ISD, will be the "clients".
